How to Choose the Best Shower Materials for a Texas Home

By TX Bath Remodel Team·

Not all shower materials perform the same in Texas. Our climate — hot summers, hard water from limestone aquifers, and surprising humidity swings — creates real challenges for certain materials that perform fine in other parts of the country.

Here’s what actually holds up in a North Texas home.

The North Texas Water Problem

Before we talk materials, let’s talk about what’s coming out of your pipes.

Most of North Texas sits on a limestone bedrock that loads the water supply with calcium and magnesium. This “hard water” leaves white mineral deposits on shower walls, glass, and fixtures. Any material with porous joints — like traditional tile grout — is constantly fighting a losing battle against scale buildup and discoloration.

This is one reason acrylic and solid surface surrounds have become so popular in this market: no grout means no mineral buildup channels.

Option 1: Acrylic Surrounds (Best Value)

Acrylic surrounds are pre-formed panels that install over or in place of your shower walls. They’re:

  • Grout-free — no porous joints for hard water scale or mold
  • Easy to clean — a weekly wipe-down keeps them looking new
  • Fast to install — most jobs complete in a single day
  • Affordable — significantly less expensive than tile
  • Durable — quality acrylic is warrantied against cracking, peeling, and fading

The limitation: acrylic looks more uniform than custom tile. If you want the look of stone or custom mosaic, acrylic won’t deliver that aesthetic.

Best for: Homeowners who want a clean, modern bathroom at an affordable price with minimal maintenance.

Option 2: Cultured Marble / Solid Surface

Solid surface surrounds (including cultured marble) are non-porous, seamless panels that mimic the look of stone without the maintenance. They’re more premium than acrylic but still grout-free.

Benefits:

  • More upscale appearance than acrylic
  • Non-porous and resistant to mineral deposits
  • Repairable if scratched (unlike tile)
  • Warrantied against cracking

Best for: Homeowners in higher-end markets like Southlake, Colleyville, and Flower Mound who want a premium look without tile maintenance.

Option 3: Ceramic and Porcelain Tile

Custom tile remains the gold standard for aesthetics. The range of styles, sizes, colors, and textures is essentially unlimited. A well-designed tiled shower is stunning.

The reality in North Texas:

  • Grout lines require regular sealing (annually)
  • Hard water causes calcium buildup in grout that requires acid-based cleaners
  • Grout can crack over time as a house settles, allowing water infiltration
  • Installation takes longer and costs more

Best for: Homeowners who want a custom showpiece bathroom and are committed to the maintenance it requires.

Option 4: Large-Format Tile with Minimal Grout

A growing trend in higher-end DFW remodels: 24x48“ or larger porcelain panels with near-invisible grout joints (1/16“ or less). This gives the custom tile look with dramatically reduced grout surface area — meaning less mineral buildup and easier cleaning.

These are significantly more expensive to install (large-format tile requires precise setting, specialized tools, and skilled labor) but are genuinely lower maintenance than traditional tile.

What We Recommend for Most North Texas Homes

For the majority of homeowners we serve in Decatur, Denton, Flower Mound, Bridgeport, and surrounding areas:

Acrylic surround + quality shower hardware — is the sweet spot of value, durability, and low maintenance for the Texas market.

If budget allows and aesthetics are the priority, solid surface or large-format porcelain delivers a premium look that handles Texas hard water better than traditional tile.
